Manuka Honey

Leptospermum scoparium

Overview

Manuka honey is a monofloral honey produced by bees that exclusively forage on the nectar of the Manuka tree, *Leptospermum scoparium*, which is native to New Zealand and parts of Australia. Unlike regular honey, Manuka honey contains high concentrations of the active compound methylglyoxal (MGO), which is derived from dihydroxyacetone (DHA) found in the Manuka flower nectar. This unique composition gives it potent antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and wound-healing properties. It is traditionally used both topically for minor cuts, burns, and chronic wounds, and internally to soothe sore throats, support digestive health, and boost immunity. The quality and potency are measured by grading systems like UMF™ and MGO, with higher numbers indicating greater therapeutic strength.

Preparation Methods

For internal use, simply consume 1-2 teaspoons (approx. 10-20g) directly from the jar. For a soothing tea, dissolve 1 teaspoon of Manuka honey in 250ml of warm (not hot, under 40°C/104°F) water or herbal tea to preserve MGO. For topical application, use a sterile spatula to apply a thin layer (about 2-3mm thick) of high-grade Manuka honey (UMF 10+ or MGO 263+) directly to a clean wound or burn, then cover with a sterile, non-adherent dressing. Change the dressing and reapply the honey every 12 to 24 hours, or as directed by a healthcare professional for chronic wounds.

Usage & Dosage

For general wellness and immune support, take 1-2 teaspoons (approx. 10-20g) daily, preferably on an empty stomach or dissolved in a warm drink. For sore throats or coughs, take 1 teaspoon every 2-3 hours as needed, not exceeding 6 teaspoons per day. For digestive support, take 1 teaspoon three times daily before meals for a duration of 4-8 weeks. For topical wound care, apply a fresh layer every 12-24 hours until the wound is healed. Long-term daily use is generally safe for healthy adults, but high consumption should be moderated due to sugar content.

Safety & Precautions

Generally safe for most adults and children over one year old. Contraindicated for infants under 12 months due to the risk of infant botulism. Diabetics should monitor blood sugar due to high sugar content. Potential side effects are rare but may include allergic reactions in individuals sensitive to honey or bee products. Use with caution if you are allergic to bees or pollen. Consult a doctor before using for deep or severe burns/wounds, or if you are taking chemotherapy drugs, as honey may interfere with some treatments.
